In this second month of the calendar year in previous years, our minds would have been filled with such thoughts as these:
How to tweak our new year resolutions to be able to keep them in some fashion & still meet our goal
What cards, candy, flowers need to be purchased
When to begin to prepare our yard for spring planting (and how many plants have to be replaced)
At the risk of sounding repetitive, this year is not like any in the past. These are “uncharted waters” for which we need a pilot. God is our pilot, the One who will lead us, but ... we need to LISTEN for his guiding instructions. Note the term is LISTEN not HEAR. “Hearing” is an automatic response to sound waves vibrating our ear drums, stimulating inner ear processes resulting in the auditory nerve sending signals to the brain where we “hear”. We do nothing; it is part of God’s magnificent creation that we “hear”.
On the other hand, “listening” requires our participation. It requires concentration to process meaning from words we “hear”. To “listen” for God’s guidance in these times requires us to prayerfully read, study, & consider His Words as found in the Bible.
“Speak for your servant is listening.” I Samuel 3: 10b (NIV)
Dear Lord, As we read and study Your word, open our ears, minds, & hearts so that we LISTEN to Your words for us. In Your holy name, we ask this. Amen.
