THIS IS OUR STORY…

How It All Started

Our story began as many often do, in adversity. A young worker by the name of Johann Taugott tragically passed away on October 3, 1900. Because the community had no pastor, they reached out to the Lutheran church in San Antonio for someone to officiate the funeral. Pastor H. Schmidt answered the call and promptly reproached the community for not having a church of their own. The young community took the message to heart and on February 22, 1901 finished laying the foundation for their new church!

The Move

In 1948, under the leadership of Pastor RC Albert, the community decided to move the church to a new location. A plot of land along the newly minted US-281 highway was accepted by the church. With the help of a general contractor, volunteers from the church began to build the new church using timber from the original building. On Sunday, August 26, 1951, the community dedicated the new building; but it wasn’t quite finished. Due to a shortage of funds the roof had yet to be painted. After raising the additional funds, a fresh coat of red paint was applied to the roof. Since then, St. Paul Lutheran Church of Bulverde has proudly worn the badge of being “The Red Roof Church”

News Flash! We’re Growing

A newspaper clipping featuring an article about the groundbreaking of a new Christian Faith Center in Bulverde, including a black and white photo of people participating in the groundbreaking ceremony on a grassy field.

Over the next 50 years, the church expanded its ministries and outreach programs to include midweek Bible studies, Mother’s Day Out, and the Living Christmas drive-through event. Over time, the church experienced significant growth, eventually outgrowing its worship and fellowship spaces. To address this, a building committee was formed to plan and raise funds for a new addition to the property. After six years of planning, the committee finalized the project, and in October 2001—marking the church's 100th anniversary—they broke ground on the new construction. The project was completed in September 2002 and dedicated as the Christian Faith Center.

Since the completion of the Christian Faith Center, the Mother’s Day Out program was transformed into a Christian Day School (CDS), offering classes for children ages eighteen months through five years, Monday through Thursday during the academic school year. More recently the Red Roof Church has welcomed several new staff members to better serve its congregation and expand its youth and young adult programs. Looking to the future, the Red Roof Church remains committed to being a beacon of faith, hope, and love for our community and making mature disciples of Jesus Christ.
